Welcome to CEDAR
CEDAR is a brand new unit at Umeå University. Our organisation consists of two subsections; the Demographic Data Base and CEDAR Research.
Together, CEDAR's subsections are striving towards the same goal: to support, strengthen and stimulate research on population and ageing. In order to reach that goal we, on the one hand, build population databases of the highest possible quality and make these available for researchers. On the other, we are seeking to establish a creative and vigorous interdisciplinary research environment.
Symbiosis between infrastructure and research
The databases are developed and managed by the Demographic Data Base, a unit that has helped Umeå University get a leading position in the area of population history ever since the 1970's. The research is in turn conducted within CEDAR Research, a kind of research centre which gathers Swedish and international researchers from a variety of backgrounds – i.e. history, cultural geography, medicine and statistics. The common theme is population studies, although from two different angles:
- Historical demographic research
- Ageing research
At CEDAR you can also find the Graduate School in Population Dynamics and Public Policy, which is financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet).
Master's Programme in Population Studies
Do you want to become an expert on population development? Great! Apply to the master's programme in population studies at CEDAR. When completing the master you will have a broad interdisciplinary knowledge on the causes and consequences of population change in different time periods and parts of the world.
